Michelle in Training

Quite often, we are influenced by those around us. This is especially true when it comes to my marathon quest. Over the years, I’ve heard a number of amazing marathon stories from friends and friends of their friends and so on. But one friend’s current marathon training is truly inspirational as she has been inspired by another friend.

Michelle and I went to Nipissing University together and over the past few years, she’s really embraced running, completing half marathons in the past year. She decided to take it up a notch and training for a marathon. All in the name of Caralyn.

Caralyn is a friend of Michelle’s who lost her battle with leukemia in 2001. Michelle has always been inspired by Caralyn’s favourite saying, “Life is too short to be ordinary”. So Michelle took Caralyn’s advice, and decided to hit two birds with one stone. Run her first marathon and raise money in Caralyn’s honour by joining the Team in Training: a program organized by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada. If you raise $6,000 for the charity, then they pay for your flight, accommodation and race entry to select races around the world. Michelle selected Rome.

Not only did Michelle raise her required $6,000, she more than doubled it. Her current tab sits at $13,630, making her one of the top fundraisers. Amazing.

This week she treks to Rome to complete her marathon, but not without her own struggles. For weeks she has been suffering from major hip pain and will find out today if it’s a stress fracture. Regardless, Michelle plans to make it to the start and finish line, hip pain and all.

When you find a reason to run the marathon, it definitely helps with your motivation to complete the training. Not only has Michelle raised so much money and will be travelling to Rome, I’m sure  – when trudging through her long training runs – she often thinks of Caralyn. I hope Michelle knows that while she may be inspired by Caralyn, we’re inspired by Michelle. Good luck this week!

Wow that is inspiring! Tell her to be ready for the cobblestone as more then half of the race is on uneven ground. But it’s so beautiful, you start and finish at the collesium and it doesn’t get much better then that!
    Good luck!!
